Virginia Howard Gaither, 93, of Roanoke Rapids, died Wednesday, October 12, 2016.

Virginia, the daughter of the late Winfield Dewey Howard and Agatha Baggett Nicholson was born in Bertie County on August 14, 1923. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Thomas Gaither, Sr. She was a retired registered nurse and worked at the Halifax County Mental Health Center.

She is survived by her daughter, Barbara F. Slagle and her husband, Linwood, Jr., of Franklin, VA; her son, Tom Gaither and Bridie of Youngsville; two grandsons, Linwood Ralph “Rusty” Slagle, III and his wife, Susan, of Franklin, VA, and Dr. Scott Slagle and his wife, Dr. Amber Slagle, of Roanoke VA; four great-grandchildren, Ella Anne Slagle, Dane Anthony Slagle, Amanda Mauger and her husband, Miles, and Victoria Hansen and her husband, Josiah; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, October 14, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Jim Hyatt officiating.

The family will receive friends on Friday from 1:45 to 2:45 p.m. at the funeral home.
